Soundwalk Training at the Dunna Drava National Park, Hungary

In the Dunna Drava National Park in Hungary, I led a retreat for park rangers and educational program directors about incorporating deep listening and soundwalking techniques into their programming. They had been inspired by Annea Lockwood, who recorded in the area for her CD “A Sound Map of the Danube” .

The Duna-Dráva National Park was established along the Danube and Dráva rivers, covering an area of some 50.000 hectares. Water played the main role in the formation of its natural landscape into a floodplain, which is a magnificently preserved ecosystem.

For 3 days, we practiced deep listening exercised, kept listening journals, read about sound, soundscape composition, sound in the natural environment (biophony), designed sound based activities and enacted them, composed and participated in soundwalks, and listened with awareness and passion.

An educational program incorporating sound-based activities was implemented over the next 3 years.
